Deezer NEXT 2017: Ray BLK

Posted by Roman Tagoe | January 16, 2017 | MUSIC

All this week we’re introducing you to the emerging acts we’re excited about in 2017. Deezer NEXT is all about supporting the next generation of great music and helping you to find your next favourite artist.

Without further ado meet one of the twelve acts we can’t wait to hear more from this year.

Introducing: Ray BLK

AKA: The Soul Star

Hometown: London, England

Who is she? This 23-year-old has already bagged the Best Newcomer prize at the recent MOBO Awards without signing to a record a label. She’s been making music since the age of 13 when she formed a group with producer MNEK and started releasing her own music while still studying English at university. BLK (it’s pronounced “Black”) stands for “Building, Living, Knowing” – her three favourite values.

The sound: She may be compared to US stalwarts like Lauryn Hill and Mary J Blige but Ray’s sound is firmly rooted in the UK. Expect a mixture of soul, R&B and hip hop that comes straight from the heart.

Why we love her: For her homegrown sounds and real life storytelling. Ray allows you to see the world through her eyes with lyrics that come from an honest place.

Start with: My Hood. It’s lyrics show off her storytelling ability at its best as she paints a picture of the streets she knows best.

Go deeper: Listen to her mini-album Durt featuring collaborations with Stormzy, Wretch 32 and SG Lewis.
