The Sun’s Head of Showbiz gets down with Deezer

Posted by sarah | December 8, 2014 | NEWS

Last week we were lucky enough to get hold of The Sun’s very own Dan Wootton for a very special Deezer By. As the king of all things showbiz, Dan is on the cusp of the UK music scene meeting and interviewing the hottest stars. Naturally, we were very keen to find out all about his year in music.

We asked Dan to give us a roundup of his top tracks of 2014 and, most importantly, why he picked them (unsurprisingly this took him no time at all). There’s no denying it, Dan’s compiled a great playlist for you to remember the year with. The playlist features pop hits from Clean Bandit to club classics from Ten Walls which dominated the dance floors this summer. This is the perfect playlist for any party occasion this Christmas. Enjoy!

Anyone not make the list you think should have? Tweet us @DeezerUK and @DanWootton to let us know.

1. La Roux, Uptight Downtown

“It was outrageously ignored by the folk at Radio 1, but La Roux made a very welcome comeback with this Eighties-inspired dance track. Four years in the wilderness was definitely worth it”

2. Royksopp and Robyn, Do it Again

“What a combination. Robyn made her long-awaited comeback with the Norwegian dance duo. It just worked.”

3. Jessie Ware, Tough Love

“A musician’s musician, Jessie is on the cusp of very big things. This stunning ballad deserved to chart higher than No 34.”

4. Ella Eyre, Comeback

“Ella shows her ball breaking steel in this soul pop number which has echoes of Amy Winehouse.”

5. Clean Bandit, Rather Be

“The most memorable melody of the year introduced Clean Bandit to the world.”

6. Lorde, Yellow Flicker Beat

“I’ve been desperate for my fellow Kiwi Lorde to prove she’s more than a one album wonder. This tune from the Hunger Games soundtrack does just that. A dark dance gem.”

7. Ten Walls, Walking with Elephants

“A creeping, menacing house cut that proved to be a summer club smash.”

8. Ella Henderson, Ghost

“The year’s big pop revelation was Ella Henderson whose two years away from X Factor resulted in a stunning debut album. Ghost, co-written by pop genius Ryan Tedder, became an instant pop classic.”

9. Charli XCX, Boom Clap

“After years of hard work, Charli XCX ‘made it’ this year on her own, in large part down to the hook on this song.”

10. Raury, Cigarette Song

“18 year-old with the world at his feet. Kanye is a fan, so should you be.”

11. Woman’s Hour, Bleeding Love

“A haunting cover from one of our favourite emerging bands.”

12. Kwabs, Walk

“New British soul at its best.”

13. Years & Years, Desire

“An infectious pop-house tune from one of 2015’s hottest prospects.”

14. Shura, Indecision

“Hugely-tipped for 2015, disco-charged pop from Londoner Shura.”

15. Calvin Harris, Outside

“Well, seeing he can’t work with Rita anymore, Ellie Goulding is definitely the second best option. This was easily the standout track on Calvin’s new album Motion.”

16. Jungle, Busy Earnin’

“Jungle lit up 2014 with their irresistible brand of electro-funk – the triumphant ‘Busy Earnin’’ is their crowning glory.”

17. Ronika, Rough n’ Soothe

“Nottingham’s music revival continued apace with the arrival of the disco-tastic Ronika’s debut album ‘Selectadisc’.”

18. Hozier, Take Me To Church

“Superb dark blues from the Dubliner who won over so many this year.”

19. Sia, Chandelier

“The famous songwriter and producer finally came out of the shadows this year. It’s a near perfect popsong with a haunting melody.”

20. Ariana Grande, Problem

“The sassy attitude of this tune made former Nickelodeon star Ariana the breakout popstar of 2014 internationally. And, hallelujah, she can really sing!”
