Fresh Friday: 15th January

This week sees the release of Curve of the Earth, the fifth album from Eel Pie Island four-piece Mystery Jets. Over the past few years they’ve trodden a similar path to the likes of The Maccabees, Bombay Bicycle Club and Foals – although unlike some of their peers, they’ve never quite shaken off their underdog status. Their latest release is yet another reason to root for them, full of well-crafted, carefully-considered and subtly rousing tunes.

California rapper Anderson .Paak first burst into public view last year when he appeared on not one, not two, but six tracks on Dr Dre’s comeback album Compton. The former NWA man has a reputation for giving promising rappers a leg up (just look at the careers of Snoop Dogg and Eminem for proof) and his latest protegé could well follow in their footsteps. His second album Malibu is out today – taking in low-slung G-funk, spacey soul and fluid verses, it’s an idiosyncratic and hugely enjoyable record from the rising star. Check it out below.

And that’s not all – the Brand New playlist has got the best music from The 1975, Laura Mvula ft. Nile Rodgers, Aurora and more. Hear it below.
