“The Measure Of Any Society Is How It Treats Its Women And Girls”
We can’t deny these past years, when it comes about women’s status in our society, the word has started to spread. As a woman, I’ve started to realize how far we have come. From all around the world, my social media feed is now comprised of good testimonies, communities rising up, but mainly, a strong will for equity. I’m sure I’m not the only who binge-listened podcasts from girl power to testimonies of women who challenge and inspire.
Did you know about our dedicated podcast collection about inspirational women?
As a woman in the music industry, I can say that we’re still very far from equal representation of all gender. But I wanted to know more, understand where we stand and what path we still have. And – spoiler alert – the news is really not that good. When it comes to artists, women only represent 21% of all artists. And as you can guess, when i’ve started to dig by genre, it doesn’t go better… Electronic, Metal, Hip hop are still musical genres where women are highly not represented (less than 10%). Though, it’s still important to underline progress that is made.. This year, 47% of Grammy nominations were women. According to theNew York Times, only 9% of nominees in the six years preceding the 2018 event were female. So, we do see some progress.
The Future is Female
But it’s not enough. Now it’s our turn to make those troublesome numbers evolve. It’s our turn to stream female artists, support them, share their work and their passion, give them the space they deserve. This is why at Deezer, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, we dedicate the month to amplify Women’s Voices, starting now. We do believe it shouldn’t be just a day, so during all the month, deezer will share on its app but also on Social Media plurality of interviews, testimonies, women supporting other women, playlists, highlights of Women behind music and many more.
In addition to this, we are happy to reveal on the 8th our new permanent collection, Women’s Voices, where you’ll be able to find an infinite amount of music & podcasts made by women, girl power playlists, anthologies of the most popular female singers, highlight of women producers (from the small 3% they represent today in the industry…), songwriters etc.
And if you want to know more about the women behind those articles and women at Deezer, keep an eye on our blog! You can also have a sneak peek at the women behind Women’s Voices projects, coming soon on deezer.io blog.
