SXSW Ones to Watch

If you couldn’t make it down to Austin last week for the annual new music explosion that is South By Southwest, our SXSW contingent are here to bring you up to speed on the stand-out performances. Here are their ones to watch:

Jidenna

Jidenna SXSW

Why we liked him: Apart from the fact he’s got style for days, Jidenna is one of our picks for Deezer NEXT. His eclectic approach to hip-hop was wildly refreshing, with wonderful nods to the two continents he’s called home.

Jain

Jain SXSW

Why we liked her: Repping France, Jain brought her uniquely sunshine-soaked hard-rhythmed pop to bear on SXSW’s Showcase

Listen up:

Aminé

Aminé SXSW

Why we liked him: The rapper busted out his funked-up sound to put Portland firmly on the hip-hop map

Listen up:

Rag’n’Bone Man

Why we liked him: The Deezer NEXT artist stunned the crowd with a phenomenal cover of Bob Marley’s ‘Is This Love’

Listen up

The Black Angels

The Black Angels SXSW

Why we liked them: The Austin natives were the perfect way to end the night with heavy beats and warm tremolo guitar that can’t be beat. Beautiful psych rock turned up to 11!

Listen up:

Giraffe Tongue Orchestra

 Giraffe Tongue Orchestra SXSW

Why we liked them: It was hard not to at the band’s first ever US show. The supergroup brings together Alice In Chains vocalist William DuVall, Mastodon’s Brent Hinds, Ben Weinman of The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Mars Volta’s Thomas Pridgen and Pete Griffin from Dethklok into one kickass prog-metalsplosionr.

Listen up:

Pvris

PVRIS SXSW

Why we liked them: They rocked the living hell out of the stage. Look out for them supporting Muse later in the year and the new album in September
